Township Plat Maps

The plat maps for Sherburne County townships show the property owner, the property location, and the acreage. The plat maps first were prepared in 1903, then again in 1914. Most available here are from 1903.

A map is a visual aid tool that translates a written land description to help locate a specific parcel. It is useful even if the property changed ownership after the maps were prepared. The Historical Society resources include property ownership records.

The original maps are colored but have been altered here to black and white to reduce the file size. Still, they are large and may take some time to download.

Below the map showing the current townships, are the five original townships created in 1858. For more information about when the current townships were created, check MNGenWeb for Sherburne County.

Each of Sherburne County's townships is divided into sections 1 mile x 1 mile. Most townships have 36 sections, all within the same range and township. Note that Big Lake, Becker and Elk River are larger, including sections from an adjoining range or township. Sections within a defined range and township are numbered thusly:

One Section
NW
1/4
NE
1/4
NE
Quarter
SW
1/4
SE
1/4
SW
Quarter
SE
Quarter
(160 acres)

Each section is divided into quarter-sections, and the quarter-sections into quarter-quarter sections. Each section contains 640 acres; each quarter-section is 160 acres. A parcel is described by its location within the quarter, which also can indicate its size. For example, a parcel described as the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 1 is 40 acres.
