Great Stories...Cool Stuff

This exhibit highlights a sampling of artifacts from our museum collection. These artifacts sometimes arrive with great stories attached to them, but sometimes the donations are simply "cool stuff."

For example, have you ever seen a silk ball gown from the 1880s? At right is a beautiful example.

Over the past 33 years families, businesses, and organizations have generously donated thousands of artifacts to the Sherburne County Historical Society (SCHS). SCHS was officially organized in 1972, but did not begin collecting until 1976. The first artifact collected by the museum is a postal sorting box from Big Lake which is on display in this exhibit.

Many other artifacts are also on display, some very old and some you might remember from your youth!

man's frock 1790'sThis man’s frock coat from the 1790s was worn by someone who was alive when George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams were leading our young country. This is the oldest object in our collection.

Warren Spahn figure

How about those Milwaukee Braves and St. Louis Cardinals? The exhibit features four baseball figures including this figure of Warren Spahn as a St. Louis Cardinal. These figures are part of the largest single family donation of items received by SCHS

pound puppyVisitors will also see vintage toys, military medals from WWII, and much more!

Do you like love stories? We found couple whose lives are quite typical for most immigrants to Minnesota, but their story might have been lost without the donation of their portraits.

Do you want to see an original document listing Civil War soldiers from Company E, First Minnesota Volunteer Regiment printed in New York in 1864 while the war was still going? It's here at the Sherburne History Center.
